Business of Supply  Madam Speaker, my hon. colleague for Peterborough—Kawartha is right in that Canadians are hurting. There is the price of gas and the price of food, and yet all the Conservatives put up as a solution is to cut the carbon tax. The carbon tax went up 3¢ a litre this year. There was such a lot of rage farming that I got a lot of calls from my constituents, who did not know that the federal carbon tax does not apply in British Columbia or that it was only going up 3¢.

Business of Supply  Mr. Speaker, I was not here before question period, so I missed most the member's speech. I would like him to repeat the details about how much the carbon tax affects the price of food, for example. I have heard from the Parliamentary Budget Officer, for instance, that it increases the price of food by 0.15% compared to the 80¢ increase I see at the gas pumps at home because of the greed of oil companies.

Department of Public Works and Government Services Act  Madam Speaker, I proudly rise today for the final right of reply to Bill S-222 at third reading. This bill, commonly known as the use of wood in government infrastructure bill, has a long history in this place, but I think it is safe to say after debate this afternoon and a vote tomorrow that it will finally become law in Canada.

Housing  Madam Speaker, I have been talking to the minister about the new insurance program that is being conceived. I look forward to seeing the details on that when it comes out, hopefully later this fall. I am also glad that the member mentioned earthquake insurance. It is not related to climate change obviously, but it is something that is of deep concern in coastal British Columbia.

Housing  Madam Speaker, this adjournment debate arises from a question I asked early last June, a question that pointed out that natural disasters, fires, floods, hurricanes and tornados are making it increasingly difficult for Canadians to afford, or even obtain, home insurance. Since then, we have had a terrible summer, a summer that was off the charts.

Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Atlantic Accord Implementation Act  Madam Speaker, we are talking a lot about offshore wind. I used to live in Newfoundland, and it is a windy place. The door blew off my Jeep once at Point Verde, just south of Argentia. I want to mention that what we need in Canada is increased interprovincial interties of electricity.

Emergency Preparedness  Mr. Speaker, this summer over 16 million hectares of forests burned; more than 200,000 Canadians were forced to flee their homes. To call this wildfire season unprecedented is an understatement, and with off-the-charts global temperatures, we can expect climate change to deliver even more extreme wildfires.

Penticton Vees  Madam Speaker, I may be a little late to this party, but this is the first opportunity I have had to stand in this place to congratulate the Penticton Vees, who won the Fred Page Cup last month, for the second year in a row. The Vees were carrying on the tradition of the Vees of 1955, who won the world hockey championship by defeating the Soviet Union five to nothing.

Judges Act  Madam Speaker, it is not often I agree with the member for Winnipeg North, but I am confused by the Conservative tactics here. This is a relatively non-controversial bill, something the Canadian Bar Association and the whole legal system has pointed out to us that they would like passed as quickly as possible so judges who do things that are improper would be properly handled and properly sanctioned.

Government Business No. 26—Amendments to the Standing Orders  Madam Speaker, I have always enjoyed the member's speeches and hearing his learned thoughts. It is great to hear de Tocqueville brought up and that sort of history. I like being here, and we have seen in the past few weeks and months that basically everybody is here. I would like to hear a good argument against a hybrid Parliament that addresses accommodating the people who cannot be here, like the people who are sick, the people who are—

Government Business No. 26—Amendments to the Standing Orders  Madam Speaker, I would like to thank the member for Steveston—Richmond East for sharing his story. We both come from British Columbia. It is very difficult, as many members know, to travel back and forth every week, as we like to do, to our homes when we live in British Columbia.
