Foreign Affairs committee  There's a broader immigration program in place for the Americas. I understand that's being discussed in a parallel committee with my colleagues from Immigration Canada.

At the Department of Foreign Affairs, we deal with issues that fall under the consular services. Unfortunately, we can't answer your question, which is actually the responsibility of the immigration department.

Foreign Affairs committee  The advice to Canadians currently is to shelter in place and to make sure they have enough food, water and medicine for the forthcoming period. Unfortunately, I can't speculate on how things will evolve, but be assured—my colleague Madame Bédard mentioned prudent planning—that we are actively planning a range of options in case they become necessary.

Foreign Affairs committee  We have detailed emergency planning, working with our missions in Beirut, obviously. We also give clear advice to Canadians to avoid travel to Lebanon.

Foreign Affairs committee  I would be happy to speak to Canada's efforts to bring out Canadians, permanent residents and their immediate family. We have, as I mentioned, one of the largest contingents of foreign nationals who came out. We were able to assist them in crossing the Rafah border. Obviously, it's a very difficult environment.

Foreign Affairs committee  We estimate that to be about 200 currently, but that number keeps fluctuating—

Foreign Affairs committee  The number of registered Canadians remaining in the Gaza region is approximately 200.

Foreign Affairs committee  There are about 50 or 60 who have been in touch with us.

Foreign Affairs committee  Canada and a large group of international allies have indeed done some preparatory work and prudent planning, with the hope it will not be necessary.

Foreign Affairs committee  Yes. Out of Israel, it's 1,661. Out of the West Bank, it's close to 80, through Jordan.

Foreign Affairs committee  The essence of the queue is related to Gaza, although we remain in contact with Canadians in the West Bank, if ever they wish to depart or need our assistance to do so.

Since October 7, our staff in Ottawa and missions on the ground in Tel Aviv, Ramallah, Amman, Cairo, Beirut and Athens have been responding to and assisting Canadians, permanent residents and their immediate families. Since the last briefing to this committee on October 23, a number of developments on Canada's consular and emergency response have happened, and I am pleased to update you today.
